Curatorial Statement

Knotty Art positions rope- and kink-informed practices as legitimate forms of artistic expression.

The project challenges misconceptions that BDSM-related practices fall outside “serious” art, reframing them as rigorous, ethical, and historically grounded disciplines.

Through installation, sculpture, performance, and visual art, Knotty Art brings together artists exploring the creative potential of consent-driven, countercultural intimacy practices.

Eligibility

The exhibition is open to artists whose work engages with rope- and kink-related practices. All artists and models must be 20 years of age or older at the time of the artwork’s creation. Participants are expected to have a minimum of two years of experience with rope or kink practices.*

Artists submitting works depicting identifiable individuals must confirm consent for the use and exhibition of their image via a model release form or similar document.* *These policies are in place to minimize the risk of exploitation and to ensure an ethical, consent-first, and safer environment for all participants.

OUR CURATOR FOR THE FIRT EDITION:

Kim Ekimose

A self-taught, multidisciplinary artist involved in collage, textiles, performance, photography, and writing. Discarded media, human connection, and radical exposure come together to expose the delicate and brutal nature of ethics, identity, illness, sexuality, and trauma. Through the juxtaposition of ethereal aesthetics and coarse concepts, personal experiences of dehumanization bleed into their practice whilst evoking humanity’s innate fragility and the importance of compassion.

Whether organizing an event or developing a personal piece, the objective remains the same. Ekimose strives to create impactful memories of shared vulnerability, entrusting emotion to participants and viewers so it no longer lives alone within the artist.
