Finding Connection at Tension

Finding Connection at Tension

Social Activities & Partnering Opportunities

Rope is much more than technique—it’s about connection, growth, and community. For many, stepping into this world can feel intimidating, especially if you don’t already have a partner. That’s why Tension puts so much energy into creating opportunities for people to meet, interact, and build relationships—whether on tatami, at socials, or online.

Online Community: Discord

Not everyone finds partners in person right away. That’s why Tension also hosts a Discord server where you can:

  • Chat casually outside of class.
  • Share resources, photos, and practice notes.
  • Connect with potential partners before meeting at an event.
  • Ask for advice or geek out about rope.

Perfect for newcomers easing in at their own pace, or visitors who join the Montreal community occasionally.

FETLIFE

Tension also monitors a group on fetlife for newcomers or folx looking for partners for people in and from out of town.

Tips for Finding a Partner

  1. Be open and respectful – Rope is intimate, but every partnership begins with conversation. Curiosity, not pressure.
  2. Attend socials – They’re designed to help newcomers integrate and make connections.
  3. Use Discord – Introduce yourself, share your interests, and see who’s available to practice.
  4. Don’t rush it – Many begin solo; partnerships often evolve naturally with presence and engagement.

In-Person Social Activities

Rope Social (first Saturday of every month)
Our free community event and the perfect entry point. We begin with introductions and group discussions, sometimes breaking into smaller conversations. Whether you’re brand new or experienced, it’s a chance to ask questions, meet potential partners, and ease into the community.

Bound to Connect & Tying Together (alternating Wednesdays)
These alternating midweek events help participants go deeper into practice and connection.

  • Bound to Connect: Guided exercises on communication, negotiation, and trust in rope.
  • Tying Together: Open, hands-on practice in pairs, with room for experimentation and skill-sharing.

Together, they create a rhythm of structured connection and free exploration, making Wednesdays a cornerstone for social integration and rope growth.

Ropey Games, Board Game Nights, Munches & Casual Events
Playful gatherings mixing rope and non-rope activities. It’s less about technical drills and more about creating space for laughter, curiosity, and relaxed interactions. check out the schedule for ongoing casual events.

Open Space - Click through for schedules and more info

Twice weekly, Tension opens for unstructured self-practice or partnered training. Come alone, observe, or connect. Many people meet partners here simply by asking: “Would you like to practice together?”

NAWAJUTSU translated literally - Rope Technique (every Sunday)
Step into the dojo, bow in, and pair off with your senior. After a warm-up (often knee-walking drills), a technique is demonstrated for all to practice. Partners alternate so everyone experiences both roles. No partner required—this class is about technical body manipulation and flow, sometimes too intense for your regular partner. Sometimes, you just need to “git gud.”

The Bottom Line

At Tension, you’re never truly alone—even if you arrive without a partner. Between our events, open practice, and online spaces, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to connect, grow, and share your rope journey alongside others walking their own paths.
